MIT grad to discuss the challenges of launching his off-grid refrigeration business in India; MIT community welcome.

Sam White, co-founder of Promethean Power, will visit the MIT Tata Center on Feb. 24th to talk about the challenges he’s faced as an entrepreneur trying to deploy technology in rural India.

White’s company creates solar refrigeration solutions primarily targeted at the tens of thousands of small dairies in rural India. India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk, but doesn’t have a reliable cold-chain to keep milk fresh and sanitary, particularly in areas where grid electricity is not available.

About the Speaker

Sam White co-founded Promethean Power Systems in 2007 after winning 2nd place at the MIT $100K competition. Promethean Power developed a thermal storage technology that enables cold-storage of perishable foods without diesel generators in areas of the world where there is unreliable power. Today, for the first time in India’s history, this revolutionary battery is eliminating the need for diesel generators for over 150 villages when chilling milk. During his journey with Promethean Power, Sam also co-founded Greentown Labs.

He is the recipient of awards such as the GE Ecomagination prize (2010); Boston Globe’s Innovator of the year (2011); NASA’s Launch Energy Innovators Fellowship (2012) and World Economic Forum Tech Pioneer (2012).
