The research of my group is focused on the use of microgrids to mitigate the problem of lack of access to electricity in India. We collect and manage information with GIS techniques, develop computer software tools that locate the individual households from satellite imagery, determine the best electrification mode (stand alone, microgrid or connection to the existing grid) for each one of them, design microgrids and support electrification planning decisions at district, state or country level. We also combine the technical, economic, regulatory, and social conditions that influence the use of microgrids to assess their viability as a large-scale solution.
