Daniel Cohn / MIT Energy Initiative Research Scientist

Dr. Cohn is a research scientist at MITEI where his research includes alternative transportation fuels and small –scale gas to liquid fuel conversion. Previously he was Plasma Technology Division Head and Senior Research Scientist at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, from where he retired in 2011. Dr. Cohn is a fellow of the American Physical Society and an inventor of 60 US patents.

The Tata research involves a systems analysis of new technology for small – scale conversion of natural gas into liquid fuel. Particular emphasis is given to gas that would otherwise be wasted by flaring .The technology uses a new approach for transformation of the gas into a hydrogen-rich gas which is then catalytically converted to methanol The methanol can potentially be used to replace diesel fuel in pumps, electricity generation and trucks. It can also be converted into dimethyl ether (DME) , a propane -like liquid that can be used as a clean cooking fuel Potential deployment in Africa and India is being assessed.
