The objective of this project is to improve the performance of motors that power home appliances. Typically, these motors are single phase and of relatively small size: no more than a few hundred watts. The indices of performance are efficiency, power factor and current distortion.

We believe that improving such motors would have benefits for both developed and emerging economies, such as that of India. Among the solutions we propose to develop are a permanent magnet hybrid motor and a new way of making a repulsion motor with a slip ring motor and phase control.
